The Baroque period in music history

The Baroque period lasted approximately from the early 17th century to the mid-18th century, or roughly 1600 to 1750. It was marked by dynamic artistic and musical developments, including the emergence of basso continuo, rich ornamentation, and the establishment of tonality. Composers such as Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi flourished during this era, contributing to a rich musical legacy that influenced later classical music. The Baroque period left a lasting mark on the development of Western music.

Key characteristics

Baroque music has several distinctive characteristics. The use of ornaments and trills gives it great expressiveness. Dynamic contrasts between loud and soft passages create dramatic tension. Basso continuo, which provides a flexible harmonic foundation, is a key feature. Polyphony and homophony coexist, and Baroque music played a crucial role in the development of tonality. A variety of instruments, such as the harpsichord, violin, and recorder, are frequently used. These elements, together with major composers such as Bach and Vivaldi, define the refined aesthetic and lasting influence of Baroque music in the history of Western music.
